Great article Rachell. You have provided tons of sound advice on some very important issues for keeping customers.

A subscribe to dozens of winery newsletters and here are a couple of points that I would be emphasize more.

1. Make sure your newsletter is not just a series of ads for your latest releases or price list. You have given lots of suggestions above.

2. Many people get a bit upset by their low open rate (I have come to accept 30% is fine). People are busy. they are not sitting waiting for your newsletter. You can maintain or increase your open rate by making the newsletter interesting and sending it out regularly.

3. you can also ask your subscribers to forward the newsletter on to friends who may be interested. This may increase your readership slightly but may pay off over the longer term.

Thanks for asking! The two biggies are Vertical Response http://www.verticalresponse.com/ and Constant Contact http://www.constantcontact.com/index.jsp. I usually recommend Vertical Response to my clients because you pay as you go and can send around 1,000 emails out for only $15! This is the best solution if you don't have a lot of emails yet and/or don't know how often you'll be sending them out. If you have a large list and plan to send them out monthly or more, then you may want to look at Constant Contact because with them you pay a flat monthly fee.

Another reason to let Constant Contact or Vertical Response handle your mailing is that they worry about deliverability, i.e. making sure that your e-mail isn't rejected as spam. A reputable company like one of these is known to major Internet Service Proividers (ISPs). Many ISPs will block your outgoing e-mail if you try to send an e-mail to more than 100 recipients at a whack.

Hi

You mentioned that you were recommending some eNewsletter software in the Linkedin posting but I could not find the details. If you could let me have details of a cheap and easy one to use that would be fantastic.

Great posting.

Many thanks

Many wineries offer free shipping, either above a certain amount of wines purchased or as a special coupon code. The ABC does prohibit offering a "free good" such as a free bottle of wine. Even there, wineries (and retailers) will offer an extra bottle now and then in their wine club. A lawyer can weigh on all of this, but shipping is not a "good" (a commodity or ware) but a service.

Please do be careful! Wineries and other producers of alcohol are not permitted to provide giveaways, free shipping, and other items of value that are complimentary, nor are they permitted to offer "incentives" to purchase. Recipes, pairing suggestions, tastings and the like are okay, though. Best wishes for successful marketing of your wines. Karen Childers, Custom Marketing for Today's Wineries
